Councilman: More Netting Needed to Protect Baseball Fans at NYC Stadiums

A Brooklyn councilman wants the Mets and Yankees to do more to protect fans from hard hit balls.

Rafael Espinal is pushing a bill that would require Yankee Stadium and Citi Field to put up more netting.

Before last season, Major League Baseball recommended teams extend the netting from behind home plate to the inner portion of each dugout.

Many teams complied, including the Mets and Yankees.

But Espinal says he wants to see the netting stretched along the entire dugout.

“We go to game, we use our phones and the billboards and the scoreboards ask us to text a certain number to the screen. And in that split second that we look down on our phones, we could get hit by a foul ball, leading to severe damage and disfiguration of your face,” Espinal said.

Espinal says there have been cases where fans had to pay thousands in medical bills because their insurance doesn’t cover the full extent of the damage caused by foul balls.
