Defenseman blasts a shot through the goal netting during KHL Final

The KHL is a crazy place where anything and everything can happen. Here’s another incredible example from the KHL Final between SKA Saint Petersburg and Metallurg Mg.

With the scored tied at three late in the game, SKA was trying to break through with the man advantage. They carefully and patiently set up their play and found the back of the net courtesy of a blistering Patrik Hersley shot.

Well … kind of. Hersley’s shot actually went through the net.

As you’d expect, there was a decent amount of confusion following the goal. Hersley and his teammates saw the puck go in and Metallurg Mg appeared to know what happened, but some of the fans in the crowd were understandably puzzled. The play was reviewed and the goal rightfully counted.

Seeing a shot go through the net is a pretty rare event, but it’s apparently more common in the KHL. Evgeny Grachyov blasted a shot through the net in a KHL game back in October. Still, it’s surprising to see this occur on such a large stage in what amounts to the KHL’s equivalent of the Stanley Cup Final. Aren’t the nets inspected before every game? Maybe Hersley’s shot was just that powerful.
