Scores of registered fishermen Monday staged protest in Deputy Commissioner Bandipra’s office against the illegal fishing netting rampant in Wullar Lake.

Alleging official connivance protestors said, “Fishries officers in Bandipora are allowing illegal netting while taking commission from few chosen people who are not falling in fishermen category.”

They said that Illegal fishing practices are posing serious threat to fish resources and aquatic biodiversity.

“We are paying to government for legal fishing but few outsiders are resorting to illegal ways of fishing with official connivance which needs to be checked,” said a fisherman Ghulam Hassan.

Protesting fishermen later met Deputy Commissioner Bandipora Sajad Hussain who assured action.
